THE VILLAGE

The small centre of Fonterutoli, in the heart of Chianti (Siena), has ancient origins: here time seems to have frozen, preserving the beauty of the Middle Ages. Because it has belonged for centuries to the “Mazzei” Marquises, the houses have been perfectly preserved from the effects of age, together with the church of San Miniato and the villa, erected at the end of the Sixteenth century in place of the fortified castle.

HISTORY

During the countless conflicts between Siena and Florence, Fonterutoli, was the place where the agreements establishing the end of the feud of the Chianti areas took place. It is said that the border was established according to where a Florentine and a Sienese knight would have met, both coming from their hometowns and leaving at the first cockcrow. Florentines relied on a black rooster that, left without any food, gave his cry much sooner than the dawn, allowing the knight (from Florence) to leave with a great advantage and to cover a long distance before their meeting, which took place exactly in Fonterutoli. From that time, Florence extended its borders up to Fonterutoli on the boundary line of Castellina, Radda and Gaiole and founded the Military and Administrative League of Chianti, embracing the Black Rooster as their emblem.
